Primary Story – Sam and Alex Help The Forest

Sam and Alex Help the Forest is a rhyming story arc consistent with the reading level of the audience. The story is about the Forbidden Magical Forest where 2 children disobey and enter. The lessons centre around the Characteristics & Needs of Living things.  In this level Community is introduced to the students making them aware of their immediate surroundings in their Communities.


1.01 – There’s a Forest in My Jar

This lesson can be used in the beginning of the story when Alex and Sam are curious about what is in the forest. Both children are aware of the trees in the forest, but have yet to be exposed to the other plants that live in the forest. This lesson will help students discover what plants need to grow and stay healthy.

1.02 – My Pet Planty

This lesson can be used in the beginning of the story when Alex and Sam are curious about what is in the forest. Both children are aware of the trees in the forest, but have yet to be exposed to the other plants that live in the forest. This lesson will help students discover what plants need to grow and stay healthy

1.03 – The Secret Lives of Plants

This lesson is used at the point in the story when the little green plant screams “OUCH” and identifies itself as a flowering plant. Students will investigate the characteristics of plants.

1.04 – A Plant is a Plant – No Matter How Small

This activity is used after Alex and Sam step on some plants and hear “OUCH.” At this point in the story, students will learn how a plant was injured and lost its leaf. Students can generate ideas and learn the importance of taking care of plants by using the guided questions provided with this lesson.

1.05 – My Senses Are Tingling

The entire story is used to help students identify where and how the five senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell) are used throughout the story.

1.06 – I’m Alive

Use the entire story to have students identify things that are living and nonliving.

1.07 – Animals Come in Many Shapes, Sizes… and Legs

The story is filled with descriptions of animals that live near the forest. It is recommended students identify descriptors and make inferences of animals in the story.

1.08 – Shhhhh! Do You Hear What I Hear?

This lesson can be used at the beginning of the story when Alex and Sam are curious about what is in the forest. Both children are aware of the trees in the forest but have yet to be exposed to the animals that live in the forest. This lesson will help students discover what animals live in the forest and how the health of the forest affects their quality of life.
