Toronto Secondary Schools
"Pathways to Discovery" Contest

Partners in Research is pleased to announce the 2007-08 Essay Contest for the Greater Toronto Area. The theme of the contest is “The Scientific Journey: Pathways to Discovery” with an emphasis on the role of health research in Canadian society.

Essays, typewritten and limited to 1000 words in length, will be accepted on topics related to health research (see complete rules for details). Entries may be submitted by individual students, or by teams of up to five (5) students (prize money for winning teams will be divided among its participants). All entries are due in no later than April 30, 2008 (Semester 2).

Papers will be adjudicated based on the “KICA” concept in the Ontario Curriculum Policy Documents, as follows: Knowledge (45%), Inquiry (20%), Communication (20%), and Application (15%).

For secondary schools in the greater Toronto area, we will be offering four (4) $250 cash awards and certificates of merit for the adjudicated top four submissions (grades 9-12). The grand prize winner will receive The June Callwood Essay Award (an engraved plaque, plus a cash prize of $250) as well as the opportunity to be a “Scientist for a Day.” This student will spend the day visiting research laboratories, touring the University of Toronto Anatomy museum, and having lunch with a Canadian scientist at the faculty club at the university.

Eligibility:  Students who are currently enrolled in secondary schools in the Greater Toronto Area may submit entries.
